This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You don’t want to look back in twenty years and think about all of the what-ifs.

I originally moved away with the intention to follow my childhood dream of playing college basketball, and I did it. I was recruited to play for a small DIII school in central Mississippi called Millsap College. Little did I know all of the other benefits that I would experience while living out my dream. There are a few things that I think you should know if you are considering moving away for schooling (and you should consider it). College is a lot of fun if you stay on top of your responsibilities.

Independence!

Yeah yeah we all know that you will get to make your own curfew, buy the snacks you wanna buy, play whatever music or TV shows you want (as late as you want), but it’s more than that. When you leave home, you don’t have mommy and daddy telling you what to do or how to do it. This seems like the best thing ever, and sometimes it is.

What you don’t realize is that you begin to learn that you probably don’t know a dang thing about time management or prioritizing or what foods will keep you and your bank account feeling good. Living away will force you to develop a schedule. You will learn to take time to eat, take time to study, take time to work, take time to SLEEP!! Please for all things good SLEEP when you need it even if you think you don’t. Because if you don’t do all of these things, you will learn of the consequences very quickly. If you fail awfully, it’s just college, you can always drive home for a weekend for a refresh!

Relationships!

Of all kinds. You will soon learn that everyone isn’t the same. Where you live has a lot to do with who you hang out with. Growing up you probably played recreational ball, ate Thanksgiving meals, and graduated high school with the same people that live five-houses away from you. You probably have the same music taste, food taste, clothing styles, etc. as everyone in your hometown. That’s just how things are, that’s what's so great about having a warm community to grow up in. It sets your values and your grounding for life’s adversity.

Surprise! College isn’t like that. You will meet people from almost everywhere. I attend a school with only 700-900 students and I have met people from at least 20 different countries and just about every state. One of my best friends is from Ethiopia. It’s super exciting to experience all of the different cultures that these amazing people bring to the table. I would NEVER have had this opportunity staying home.

Decision Making and Growth

I thought I was an expert decision maker. Boy was I wrong! I laugh so hard at my failings from freshman year and cry about others. And yes, I still make questionable decisions on the regular, I’m still learning. But I can tell you that I sure am not going to make the same mistakes twice!

Having to make decisions for yourself you will learn what you are capable of, what’s good for you, and what’s not so good for you. However, while college is a taste of independence, you still have quite a bit of shelter from most of the world, so if you do happen to fail or make a blunder, it’s not fun, but at least the consequences are usually a bad grade or an awful hangover and not something crazy like homelessness.

College is a lot of fun, a great place to learn, a great place to make friends, a great place to get involved, and see some of the world that you might not see otherwise. And more than likely, if you do come from a hometown like mine, you’ll always have a place to run home too. Take a risk, before finances, family, and work starts to consume the majority of your time!
